Welcome to Georgetown

Historic community with a beautiful town square

Georgetown is a historic Williamson County community located 25 miles north of Austin along Interstate 35. Georgetown boasts having the “Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas,” centered on the Beaux-Arts style Williamson County Courthouse.

First established in the mid-1800s, Georgetown grew slowly until the 1960s when its development accelerated in line with that of Austin. In 2008, Forbes named Georgetown one of the best cities in the country for launching a new business, and its growth continues with that of surrounding Williamson County in the present day.

Housing options include homes dating back to the Victorian period, with the area surrounding the town square considered one of the nation’s best-preserved pre-WWI historic districts. There are also many modern and spacious single-family homes. Georgetown’s warm climate and upscale Sun City retirement community have made it a popular choice among retirees, while its proximity to Austin attracts urban professionals and young families.

Georgetown’s main downtown area covers the streets surrounding its scenic town square, with many businesses along Austin Avenue—a street that runs north to south through the community. Georgetown Antiques Mall curates a fascinating collection of items from the Depression, Civil War, and Victorian eras. Standout dining options include health-focused salads and teas at Nancy’s Sky Garden, creative pizza pies and craft beers at 600 Degrees, and authentic Southwestern eats at local chain Blue Corn Harvest. Austin-style Tex-Mex is on offer at family-run Dos Salsas, while Wildfire is an old-school Texan steakhouse and saloon with a delicious menu of modern surf ‘n’ turf dishes.

Close to the 1911 Williamson County Courthouse, the Williamson Museum offers a fascinating insight into the county’s history. The South Fork of the Gabriel River cuts east to west across Georgetown before meandering south, and Blue Hole Park is situated on its banks a few blocks north of the town square, offering wading areas and beautiful views of the limestone bluffs on the opposite bank. Three levels of stalagmites can be explored in the breathtaking Inner Space Cavern a short distance south of Georgetown on Interstate 35.

Georgetown operates its own Independent School District.
